Mountain Trekking Uganda Hiking Safaris
Mount Elgon National Park
Right on the border of Uganda and Kenya lies this mountain, an extinct volcano. There are great caves, gorges and waterfalls that give very stunning scenery. There is abundant bird life, leopard, hyena, civet, baboon, buffalo, elephant and chimpanzees.
The mountains have a gentle slope that does not require mountaineering gear. You will come very close to coffee plantations that are beautifully spread out on the terraced landscape. The bamboo forests that amalgamate with other vegetation enhance all this.
You can get very beautiful pictures from the Sipi falls. Nearby is an old house that used to be a retreat for the historical colonial government.
Cultural dancers, their colorful dress, handicrafts and customary practices all of which are worth seeing will graciously entertain you.
Rwenzori Mountains National Park
Located on the western Uganda border, the park lies below the Rwenzori Mountains. Nature walks through the foothills will take you a diversity of fsuna. Lately, the park is not so operational. Information about it can be released as soon as the situation is better. Elephant, mongoose, hydrax, and some antelope species are expected here.
Mgahinga National Park
It is the smallest Park but one of the most significant because like Bwindi, it is home to the endangered gorilla.
Lying in southwestern Uganda, this Park is part of the Virunga Conservation area. It adjoins Rwanda’s volcano and the Democratic Republic of Congo’ Virunga National Park.
The park has afromontane vegetation and a cool climate. The bamboo dominates it, which is a delicacy to the gorillas.
Gorillas aside, the park is habitat to buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks, the golden monkeys, jackal, porcupine and many more. There are also unique species of birds – Rwenzori turaco, Crowned Crane and others. Tracking in the park takes 3 – 8 hours.
There are three extinct volcanoes, which offer a good hiking experience to those in good physical health. No specific mountaineering gear is required.
The park is very scenic offering great phonographic opportunities.
There is a wide range of accommodation facilities in Kisoro.
It takes about 8 hours to get to the park from Kampala. Public transport means are also available. Flights can be arranged on Mondays and Fridays from Entebbe to Kisoro.
