  • A gorilla familyGorillas are non- territorial and lives in groups called troops.
  • The group is led by the oldest and strongest adult male called a silver back.
  • A Gorilla group move together and feed together.
  • Gorillas construct nets to spend the night in.
  • To avoid in -breeding, adolescent female transfer to another groups before reproducing at around 8 years of age.
  • A gorilla family is composed of young and mature gorillas (babies, youth & adults)
  • Gorillas spend most of the day time feeding and their stomachs are huge to accommodate large quantity of feeds.
  • Late arrivals do not receive the benefits of high ranking females such as having their offspring remain close to the dominant silver back for protection. It is for this reason that females most often join a lone silver back or a newly formed troop rather than a long-established one.
  • Gorilla troops have a home range between 4-25 km2
  • Silver backs are more aggressive  and defends the group in case of an attack.
  • Gorillas gives nose- to – nose greetings and gestures like touching.
  • Its rare to find gorillas competing for food.
  • Mothers and older siblings also help protect the young.
