It’s the second smallest National Park in Uganda after Mgahinga National Park at 370sqkm and 33.7sqkm. Lake Mburo National Park is dominated by woodlands as there as there are no elephants to tame the vegetation. Other type of vegetation includes forest gorges, savanna and rocky ridges.

The park is strategically located close to the highway that connects Kampala to western Uganda where most of Ugandan National Parks are found. Lake Mburo National Park is located in Kiruhura District; approximately, the park is about 30 kilometers (19 mi), by road, east of Mbarara, the largest city in the sub-region. Lake Mburo National Park protects over 350 bird species as well as zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, oribi, Defassa waterbuck, leopard, hippo, hyena, topi and reedbuck.

While in Lake Mburo National Park, enjoy the view of 13 other lakes and choose your favourite one for boat cruising. Waters in Lake Mburo National Park offers a clear ground to see a variety of water loving animals like crocodiles and Hippos alongside other animals lingering at the shores before or after drinking water.

How to get there?

You drive towards western Uganda but branch off before reaching Mbarara Town. It takes about 4 hours to get to Lake Mburo from Kampala, and 4 ½ hours from Entebbe International Airport.

Tourist activities in Lake Mburo National Park

Game viewing – hire a private vehicle from tour operators. Drive through Lake Mburo National Park to see a variety of animals like Zebras, impala, eland, buffalo, oribi, Defassa waterbuck, leopard, hippo, hyena, topi and reedbuck among others.

Birding – expect to see indigenous and migrant birds in Lake Mburo National Park. You are likely to encounter Rufous-bellied Heron, Bateleur, Coqui Francolin, Grey Crowned Crane, Black-bellied Bustard and Brown-chested Lapwing and so on.

Boat trip- you can choose your favorite boat tour and on which lake. Expect to see a variety of water loving mammals and birds.

Accommodation in Lake Mburo National Park

Accommodation ranges from Budget to Luxury. There are tents at Rwonyo park headquarters; there are also three public campsites. Luxury accommodation is provided at the Mantana Luxury Tented Camp and an up market place to stay is Mihingo Lodge, Mburo Safari Lodge among others.
