Decide on the duration of your safari:

Gorilla safaris can last from a single day to several days. It’s recommended to plan for at least three days to fully enjoy your gorilla safari experience. You will have enough time to track gorillas, participate in other activities like community tours, and rest in between.

Choose a reputable tour operator:

There are many tour operators in Uganda that offer gorilla safaris. Research and choose a reputable tour operator with experience in organizing gorilla safaris. They will help you plan your itinerary, arrange your transportation, and provide you with a guide who will take you through the gorilla tracking process.

There are two major ways to identify a good tour operator; they must be registered with the Uganda tourism board and a member of one of the recognized tour operator associations most especially the Association of Uganda tour operators. (Auto)

Choose a gorilla trekking destination:

Uganda has two gorilla trekking destinations; Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has the highest number of gorillas, while Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has fewer gorillas, but it’s the only park where you can trek golden monkeys.

Of the five gorilla trekking places in Uganda; Bwindi has four of them. These are; the Buhoma sector, Rushaga sector, Ruhija sector, and Nkuringo sector.

Obtain a gorilla permit:

A gorilla permit is a must-have document that allows you to track gorillas in their natural habitat. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) issues gorilla permits, and it is advisable to book your permit in advance, especially during the peak season. You can obtain a gorilla permit through a tour operator

Once you have obtained your gorilla trekking permit, then you can proceed to organize all the other necessary things for your gorilla safari.

Book your flights

Uganda has one international airport, Entebbe International Airport, which is located about 35 kilometers from the capital, Kampala. You can book your flights directly to Entebbe or through a travel agent. It’s recommended to book your flights well in advance to get the best rates.

In most cases, tour operators only offer rates without flights. However though flights are a very important part of your trip, it is wise to book flights after confirming the availability of gorilla trekking permits on your desired dates.

Arrange airport transfers:

Once you arrive at Entebbe International Airport, you will need to arrange airport transfers to your hotel or safari destination. Many tour operators offer airport transfers as part of their package, so be sure to confirm this when booking your gorilla safari.

Plan your transportation:

You will need transportation to get to your gorilla trekking destination. Gorilla safari tour operators will always recommend cars according to your budget. The most expensive option is the classic Land Cruiser. However, if you wish to have a cheaper option, the Land Cruiser Prado TX with a pop-up roof would be a better option.

Check your health:

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through steep and sometimes challenging terrain. It’s important to be physically fit and healthy to participate in this activity. If you have any health issues, consult your doctor before booking your gorilla safari. Additionally, ensure that you have all the necessary vaccinations and medications for Uganda.

Get travel insurance:

Gorilla trekking is a physically demanding activity, and accidents can happen. It’s recommended to get travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, accidents, and evacuation.

Pack appropriately:

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through forests and sometimes muddy trails. It’s essential to pack appropriate clothing and gear, including hiking boots, long-sleeved shirts, and pants, a waterproof jacket, gloves, a hat, and insect repellent. Check out the gorilla packing list here
