DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO: The catastrophic eruption of Mount Nyiragongo which occurred in 2002 has again resurfaced. On 22nd May 2021, a thick orange cloud formed above Goma city and other areas near Virunga National Park. What was it? The biggest active Volcano Nyiragongo was erupting.

In few months, the report indicated a quick filling of the crater which was a sign of future eruption. The speculation came true to 22nd May 2021. Fifteen were killed, including nine in a traffic accident as residents fled, four who tried to escape Munzenze prison in Goma and two who were burned to death, government spokesman Patrick Muyaya said in a statement. That figure will likely rise considerably. A Reuters reporter saw two people killed by the initial eruption in a village north of Goma, and witnesses spoke of dead and missing relatives.
Many people are home homeless and others left the country early to Gisenyi province in Rwanda. Many houses are burnt down and many people are now confused- their hope is now in the government to help them reconstruct their homesteads.
Can the current eruption promote Gorilla tourism in DRC?
According to the writer, everything is still in speculations. The eruption can promote Gorilla tourists on one side and it can fail to promote it on the other side.
There is a possibility of promoting Gorilla tourism because people would go to DRC to witness the effects of the current eruption and then go Gorilla trekking. International organizations will come in to help the affected people and among the delegates, some would like to go gorilla trekking.
The news of eruption has gone viral and the country at large has been put in much light for the world to search more about it. For that case, Gorilla tourism can be promoted in Democratic Republic of Congo and nearby countries like Uganda and Rwanda.
On the other hand, Gorilla tourism may not be promoted because of the following reasons:
• Some parts of DRC are still insecure due to rebel influence.
• Some National Parks experiences rebels attack in which some rangers have lost their lives.
• International flights are not yet well developed at Goma International Airport which is near Virunga National Park and Kahuzi- Biega National Park.
