GORILLA TREKKING SAFARI

Gorilla safaris ranked number one in Uganda and its evidenced by the large number of people storming Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla parks to see Gorillas. Uganda gorilla permit now goes up to US$700 but still, the demand for them is high throughout the year.

Currently, Uganda protects 19 habituated Gorilla groups making a total of 152 gorilla permits per day however, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park protects 18 habituated gorilla families, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has one habituated gorilla family called Nyakagezi.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has four sectors where travelers can go gorilla trekking: the Buhoma sector, the Rushaga sector, the Ruhija sector, and the Nkuringo sector. When booking Gorilla permits at the head offices of Uganda wildlife Authority, you must clearly state the sector you want to trek Gorillas from.

A gorilla permit is a major requirement for all travelers willing to encounter Gorillas in their natural habitat. It’s advisable to book your permits in advance to secure your trip. Gorilla trekking safaris begin from Entebbe Airport or Kampala city – travel to southwestern Uganda – proceed to Bwindi impenetrable forest national park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

All guests are expected to stay near the park for the next day’s Gorilla tour because the trek begins early at 7:30 am with a briefing and at 8 am, guests start the walk in the forests to meet Gorillas.

The rangers take the responsibility for guiding trekkers throughout the exercise.

CHIMPANZEE TREKKING TOUR

Chimpanzee trekking is the second sought activity after Gorilla trekking. If you missed Gorilla trekking at least go chimpanzee trekking.  Chimpanzee trekking tours are conducted in Kibale National Park, Kyambura Gorge, Kalinzu Forest, Budongo Forest, and Toro- Semuliki game reserve.

Kibale National Park offers the popular chimpanzee trekking in Uganda however, other locations also do but at a cheaper cost of US$50 per person compared to US$200 for Kibale National Park. Visitors can supplement Chimpanzee trekking with Chimpanzee habituation to see the chimpanzees in detail.

Chimpanzee habituation is done in Kibale National Park at US$250 for foreign nonresidents, USD 250 per person for Foreign residents, and UGX 150,000 per person for East African citizens.  The chimpanzee habituation experience in the Budongo forest cost $160. This amount is less than that charged in Kibale National Park.

Golden Monkey Tracking

Mgahinga gorilla national park is the only place in Uganda that offers golden monkey tracking. The activity is available throughout the year. Unlike gorilla trekking, it does not require prior booking. All golden monkey entrances are bought at the park offices.
