QENP is situated in Western Uganda, spanning the districts of Kasese, Kamwenge, Rubirizi, and Rukungiri. The park is approximately 400 kilometers (250 mi) by road southwest of Kampala, Uganda’s capital and largest city.

What is the size of this park?

Queen Elizabeth National Park occupies an area of 764 square miles (1,978 square km) in a region of rolling plains East of Lake Edward and foothills south of the Ruwenzori Mountains. For more information, QENP is the second largest National Park in Uganda after Murchison Falls National Park.

What are the major activities done in Queen Elizabeth National Park?

QENP is a haven of attractions and so a variety of tourist activities are done in this park. They include Game drive/ game viewing drives through the park, a Boat cruise/ trip on the Kazinga channel to see water-loving mammals and birds, Community visits, Chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge and Kalinzu Forest, Bird viewing, The tree climbing tour in Ishasha sector and cultural tours among others.

Which animals can’t I miss while on Queen Elizabeth National Park Game drive?

Once you visit Queen Elizabeth National Park, you can not miss seeing water bucks, elephants, antelopes, African buffalo, Ugandan kob, hippopotamus, topi, warthog, and giant forest hog,  among others. Rarely seen animals include the nocturnal like leopards and tree-climbing lions.

Which water-loving Mammals are a must-see on the Kazinga channel?

While on a boat cruise, expect to see Hippos, Crocodiles, Monitor lizards, and so on. You can also see other animals at the bank of the channel while quenching their thirst and others visit the water bank to cool temperatures. Such animals include elephants, Buffaloes, Antelopes, and many others.

Which are the major Game drive trails in QENP?

Queen Elizabeth protects over 95 mammal species of which some can be seen while on a game drive in different game-viewing trails of the park.  Some of the big mammals include Lions, Elephants, Buffaloes, Leopards, Hyenas, bush pigs, warthogs, water bucks, bushbucks, and Hippos. It is also home to six monkey species which include the beautiful black and white colobus monkey, baboon, and Chimpanzees in Kyambura gorge.

  • Mweya trail is a piece of land protruding between the Kazinga channel and Lake Edward.
  • Kasenyi plains. During the day the Kasenyi plains are flocked with frequent visits that are interested in seeing the lion.
  • The southern sector of Queen Elizabeth National park called Ishasha hosts the tree climbing lions – often found relaxing in the fig trees after the night and early morning hunting.

What are the major birds in Queen Elizabeth National Park?

Over 600 bird species are found in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Birding International ranked the park among the Important Birding Area (IBA). While in QENP, look for the African mourning dove, Swamp flycatcher, Grey-headed kingfisher, pin-tailed whydah, slender-tailed nightjar, and collared pratincole. Look out for the flamingos and so on.
